This exhibition and associated public events seek to capture and explore the ways that birds influence our understanding of our place in the world. To understand ourselves and our surroundings, humans think in metaphor and view the world through an imagined lens. As the enchanted realm of birds provides a natural metaphor for the innate desires and aspirations of human existence, so too does it inspire the creation of art. The sheer scale of birds in nature, found in every earthly domain no matter how inhospitable, and their remarkable mechanisms of adaptation to land, air, and sea, contribute to our fascination.

The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making; illus. by Ana Juan. Feiwel, 2011. [256p]. ISBN 978-0-312-64961-6 $16.99 Reviewed from galleys R Gr. 5-8 When the Green Wind offers to take young September to Fairyland via flying leopard, she jumps at the chance. After all, her twelve years on her parents' tomato farm have thus far been uneventful, and what child wouldn't choose gallivanting through a magical world over washing teacups? So off September goes through the Closet Between Worlds to the enchanted realm of Fairyland, where, as promised, plenty of adventures await her. There's a stolen witch's spoon that needs recovering, a literate dragon (or Wyvern, to be precise) that needs befriending, a Pooka in need of saving, and one tyrannical Marquess in need of a stern talking-to. Originally published online in serialized form, the story is peppered with allusions to the classics of fantasy; the most obvious antecedents are The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and Alice in Wonderland, but bits of Lewis and Nesbit appear as well. Despite this abundance of literary references, the work manages to remain unique, creative in both its far-flung adventuring and its intensely lyrical language. The fantastical world and its inhabitants nearly jump off the page through Valente's powerful, evocative imagery, and the well-crafted prose becomes almost poetic in its descriptions of and musings on Fairyland. The wise, somber tone of the omniscient narrator brings an emotional weight to an otherwise standard quest story, striking a delicate balance of profundity and playfulness. To be sure, the pace is ambling at best, so readers used to lightning-fast tales of wizard duels and deity battles may feel disoriented, [End Page 494] but those who like to relish their time in faraway places will find themselves utterly enchanted. Final illustrations not seen.
