In the Freestyle Battle2014 the participants every round can choose whether they want to play as centaurs, which technically means having to enter the moves manually, or whether they let any UCI-engine play automatically (of course with a specifically prepared opening book). 16 of the 30 participants always play as centaurs; another 9 play mainly as centaurs, but in a few cases (when they had other obligations) employed an engine; 3 computer players occasionally tried their luck as centaurs, and only 2 players relied exclusively on the engines. Roughly speaking, 83% of the field are centaurs and 17% pure engine players. The engine players thus more often than not play against centaurs, and a third of all games is played between these two groups. Only in 10 from 265 games did computer programs play against each other.
In the Elimination Tournament participants play mode-double-elimination against two opponents. In this version no random pairings are possible, and participants should try to predict the opponents. The first 6 rounds are Single Elimination (of 3 games), the next 8 rounds are Double Elimination (2 games per round), and the finals are decided in a mode-double-double-elimination of 3 games each. The elimination rounds consist of 4 games. In the match elimination, both participants play 4 games on the same bracket. Round A features 3 normal games, a deciding game, and Round B has the normal 1-3 games. Round C has the normal 3 games, a deciding game, and Round D has the normal 3 games. In the finals, one participant plays 3 games and the other 3 games. Exceptionally, in the first 3 rounds two participants play the first match each, each playing 3 games. In the finals one participant plays 3 games for his tournament and the other 3 games for his opponent. This is technically a self-match, but we decided to apply this rule for symmetry reasons. d2c66b5586
